A HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING. AN
EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM SUNDAY AFTERNOON
THROUGH MONDAY AFTERNOON.
A BERMUDA HIGH OVER THE WESTERN ATLANTIC THROUGH MONDAY WILL
BRING HOT AND HUMID CONDITIONS TO THE REGION ON WEST TO SOUTHWEST
WINDS. HIGH TEMPERATURES ACROSS MOST OF NORTHERN AND CENTRAL
VIRGINIA AS WELL AS THE BALTIMORE AND WASHINGTON METROPOLITAN
AREAS WILL REACH THE MID AND UPPER 90S EACH DAY. A FEW LOCATIONS
MAY REACH 100 DEGREES.
THE HOT TEMPERATURES COMBINED WITH HIGH HUMIDITY WILL CAUSE HEAT
INDICES TO APPROACH 105 DEGREES THIS AFTERNOON. HEAT INDICES MAY
APPROACH 110 DEGREES SUNDAY AND MONDAY.
THE COMBINATION OF HOT TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITY WILL
COMBINE TO CREATE A SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE
POSSIBLE. SINCE THIS IS THE FIRST PERIOD OF HOT AND HUMID WEATHER
THIS SEASON...MOST AREA RESIDENTS HAVE NOT YET ACCLIMATED TO
THESE CONDITIONS. THAT MAKES HEAT RELATED INJURIES MORE LIKELY.
HERE IS A REFRESHER ON SOME HEAT SAFETY TIPS. WEAK LOOSE
FITTING...LIGHT WEIGHT...AND LIGHT COLORED CLOTHING. DRINK PLENTY
OF NON ALCOHOLIC FLUIDS. WATER IS YOUR BEST CHOICE. STAY OUT OF
THE SUN...AND SPEND AT LEAST SOME TIME IN AN AIR-CONDITIONED
ROOM. NEVER LEAVE CHILDREN OR PETS IN A LOCKED CAR...EVEN WITH
THE WINDOWS CRACKED.
ALSO REMEMBER TO CHECK UP ON RELATIVES AND NEIGHBORS...ESPECIALLY
THOSE WHO MAY NOT HAVE AIR CONDITIONING OR WHOSE POWER IS STILL
OUT FROM THE RECENT SEVERE STORMS.
LISTEN TO NOAA WEATHER RADIO OR YOUR LOCAL MEDIA FOR THE LATER
UPDATES ON THIS SITUATION.
