SPECAL WEATHER STATEMENT NWS NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER/WEATHER FORECAST OFFICE OLNEY MARYLAND 840 PM EDT AUG 22,2011
HURRICANE IRENE UPDATE
HURRICANE IRENE UPDATE AS OF 8:30 PM
IRENE STRENTHENS TO A CATEGORY 2 HURRICANE. DATA FROM A NOAA HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT INDICATES WINDS HAVE PICKED UP TO 100 MPH AND PRESSURE HAS FALLEN 6 MB IN 3 HOURS.
IRENE IS EXPECTED TO BECOME A MAJOR HURRICANE BY 2PM TUESDAY WINDS OF 115 OR GREATER. MODELS ARE STARTING TO COME INTO AGREEMENT THAT THERE WILL BE A LANDFALL SOMEWHERE ALONG THE CAROLINIA COAST EATHER IN NORTHERN SOUTH CAROLINA OR SOUTHERN NORTH CAROLINA. ITS STILL TO EARLY TO TELL WHAT IT WILL BE BUT ITS NEARLY CERTIN AND IS IN GOOD AGREEMENT BY THE MODELS THAT IT WILL BE A HURRICANE WHEN IT COMES ASHORE IN THE CAROLINA’S.
HURRICANE IRENE IS STILL OVER WARM WATER AND ITS INTERATION WITH THE MOUNTAINS OF THE DOMMINCAN REPUBLIC IS MINIMAL THERE FOR IT WOULD STRENTHEN MORE IT SHOULD BECOME A MAJOR HURRICANE TOMARROW TUESDAY IN THE AFTERNOON SOMETIME AS THE STORM CHERNS THROUGH THE BAHAMA’S
LANDFALL IN THE UNITED STATES IS STILL SEVERAL DAYS AWAY ANYONE IN THE CAROLINA’S SHOULD MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THE HURRICANE AND STAY TUNED TO UPDATES ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER ON IRENE AS THE STORM GETS CLOSER LOCAL WEATHER OFFICES WILL START ISSUEING HURRICANE POTENTAL STATEMENTS.
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECAST OFFICES IN STERLING VIRGINIA AND IN OLNEY WILL ISSUE STATEMENTS AS THE STORM GETS CLOSER TO THE AREA DEPENDING ON LANDFALL LOCATION AND TIME.
