HURRICANE IRENE UPDATE
LONGER RANGE MODELS INDCATE A POSSIBLE LANDFALL OF IRENE IN SOUTH CAROLINA AS A CATEGORY 3 HURRICANE THERE IS STILL MUCH UNCERTINTY TO THESE TRACKS BUT SHOULD THE HIGH PRESSURE THAT IS OVER US NOW MOVE OFF AS IS FORECAST THEN A STRONG HURRICANE IRENE COULD POSE A THREAT TO THE WASHINGTON/BALTIMORE METRO AREA.
HURRICANES ARE VERY RARE IN THE MID ATLANTIC EXPECALY ON LAND IN THE MID ATLANTIC AREA THE LAST HURRICANE TO PROMPT THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TO ISSUE A INLAND HURRICANE WATCH WAS HURRICANE HUGO IN 1989 BUT THE COLD FRONT THAT WAS FORECAST TO BE CLOSER AT THE TIME OF LANDFALL WAS FARTHER WEST THERE FORE THE WASHINGTON METRO AND BALTIMORE METRO AREAS WHERE SPARED THE WORST OF IT IN 2003 THEN CATEGORY 2 HURRICANE ISABEL MADE LANDFALL ALONG NORTH CAROLINA COAST AND PRODUCED STRONG TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS OVER THE METRO AREA WITH LOTS OF RAIN AND FLOODING POWER WAS LOST TO A LOT OF PEOPLE AND DAMAGE TO HOUSES AND TREES.
THOUGH HURRICANE IRENE IS STILL MORE THAN A WEEK AWAY FROM OUR AREA IT DOESN’T HURT TO MONITOR PRODUCTS ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL HURICANE CENTER IN FLORIDA THEN WHEN IT CROSSES THE 30 DEGREE NORTH LINE IT BECOMES RESPONSCIBLITY OF THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER OLNEY MARYLAND .
RESIDENTS IN THE COSTAL COMUNITIES OF MARYLAND VIRGINIA AND DELAWARE ARE ADVISED TO KEEP A EYE ON THE HURRICANE AS IT APPROCHES AND STAY TUNED TO PRODUCTS ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTERS IN MIAMI FLORIDA AND OLNEY MARYLAND AND STAY ALERT TO PRODUCTS ISSUED BY YOUR LOCAL NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECAST OFFICES AS THE STORM GETS CLOSER
