A major winter storm is passing just to the north of the Washington area today, bringing snow and sleet to parts of Pennsylvania and New York. For the DC metro area, with temperatures above freezing, the precipitation expected for the remainder of the day will be all rain. That rain will combine with temperatures in the lower 40s to make for a chilly, damp day. As the storm system exits tonight, an arriving cold front from the northwest will usher in very windy conditions for Monday and Tuesday. Sustained and possibly damaging winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 45 are possible. As the winds subside at midweek, a clipper system will bring the chance of light snow to the DC area on Wednesday. Some of the coldest air of the season is expected in the wake of the snow with highs only in the upper 30s and lower 40s and nighttime lows in the 20s. NOTE: While winter officially begins in three weeks on the occasion of the winter solstice, meteorologically speaking, winter began yesterday and runs through February. So yes, get out the cold weather gear, it''s going to be a ''''wintry'''' week!
